Chapter 39
During his 15-hour flight from Pyongyang, North Korea, to London, England, S relaxed, ate a meal, and enjoyed a scotch on the rocks. He traveled first class, as the government wanted to ensure he was relaxed and ready to complete the mission in Massachusetts. He took nothing for granted, having grown up poor in a rural district in North Korea, and he was appreciative of the fine life he had achieved as a top spy and assassin there.
S was not an unattractive man, but he was remote. One of the stewardesses thought she might flirt with him, but when she became too friendly, he looked at her coldly. A sudden wave of fear swept over her, and she backed off. She couldn’t quite explain it, but she felt this man was dangerous, so she returned to her station at the rear of the plane. She said nothing, but she shuddered.
In London, S stayed at the Langham Hotel on Regent Street. That evening, he went to the Wigmore Pub, ordered a pint of Guinness and a cheeseburger with chips. He was tired from a long flight and looked forward to returning to his room for some sleep. He had another day of layover in London before flying to Logan International Airport in Boston. The next day, he would visit the Churchill War Rooms, a place recommended to him by numerous government officials.
His day in London was relaxing, and the next day he boarded an American Airlines flight to Boston. He was met there by a small contingent of North Korean intelligence officers. They took him in the waiting car and drove to an apartment on Commonwealth Avenue in the Back Bay section of Boston. They showed him a variety of weapons, including Glocks, throwing knives, and an automatic rifle. They also had several poisons and syringes at his disposal. He examined the gear carefully, made his selection, and thanked the intelligence officers. They had arranged for him to stay at the Doubletree Hotel in Cambridge, and once he had his gear packed in a secure duffel, the men drove S to his room overlooking the Charles River.
