We woke up to 4 inches of new snow this morning. On Log Deck, we had the trail to ourselves as we skied through fresh, light snow. A quick run on moonshine had led to a traverse to Alpine Springs, where we found nice snow and no skiers. The wind was blowing up the track, and though the temperature wasn’t that low, the wind chill was driving it down.
After some runs, we retreated to the Alpine Springs Lodge for hot chocolate and rest. Some runs down Naked Lady with its undulations and dipsy doodle sections were fun as we slid through the new snow letting our edges run. When conditions are good, you have to watch out for the 18-30-year-old crazies, who are more often than not on snowboards. There were a few out there today, and we were vigilant.
We will dine at the Stew Pot, Snowmass’s bargain comfort food restaurant, tonight. Everything is good there, as is the Avalanche Ale from Breckinridge, Colorado.
Part of the fun of staying in the same small hotel every year is getting to know the staff and other guests. Some of our favorite teams no longer work at the hotel. Some have left due to the evolution of life, and others may have resigned when the new owners took over the hotel. Helen in housekeeping is still here. Today as we went to the slopes, I saw here at the reception desk on the computer. I joked that she was doing everything and asked if I could get a ski lesson with her at 2:00 PM.
It was back to the Stew Pot for grilled cheese and avocado sandwiches last night. With a side of Caesar salad, our meal was delicious. The temperature is 16 degrees now, and we should have clear skies while we ski with Chef Diane and Dean.
