Highway 5 was home to light traffic yesterday as we made our way south to Petco Park in search of vaccine. We left early, a good idea, considering the long lines around the Ace Parking lot, where the UCSD staff were administering the Moderna Vaccine.
There was confusion in the air. The paper said that people 75 and older were eligible to receive the vaccine, but the UCSD website said only health providers were eligible. We brought out psychology licenses as backup.
I was struck by the lack of order in the traffic jams surrounding the vaccination site. Only when cars neared the site were there traffic officers. There were also no signs directing us to the lot. In fairness to UCSD and the county, its partner in the endeavor, they had little time to set the site up and get the process rolling.
The vaccination process itself was smooth and seamless. The staff were polite and efficient. Our nurse told me they were vaccinating 5000 people a day. Leaving the site was difficult due to the heavy traffic. People were very patient in light of the fact that the process was literally life -saving.
Covid is a slow-moving Katrina, but more dangerous and more lethal. Clearly, we are in the midst of a public health emergency, though you would not have known it listening to the recent government. What have we learned? The words, federal leadership, coordination, and responsibility come to mind.
Trump leaves this morning. He is not getting the send off he wanted. He said he did what he came to do. Did he mean let a health crisis blossom and level the economy, cozy up to international leader-thugs, relocate money into the hands of people who didn’t need it, punish innocent children, and savage beautiful landscapes?
Glad you got it done Mr Mayor of Petco Park.
I didn’t know you were 75’ lucky you. Was it hard to get the appointment?
